Pertama ko kena minat la.. heheh.. untuk jadi safety officer nie amat mudah. maksud aku kau tak payah ada degree untuk apply jadi safety officer sebab syarat untuk kursus hanya mininum SPM pangkat 3. tapi kalau ada degree satu kelebihan la masa kau kerja nanti.

Yang kedua, kena la pegi kursus dulu.. kursus dia boleh amik kat NIOSH (National Institute Of Occupational Safety and Health) ataupun CONSIST. tapi better amik ngan NIOSH la ( Gua bukan pemegang saham NIOSH tau...) sebab NIOSH nie under Kementerian Sumber Manusia.

Kursus dia dipanggil Certificate Of Safety and Health Officer, harga untuk kursus nie ialah 4k. (termasuk minum pagi, makan tengahari dan minum petang). Kursus plak selama 22 hari dengan kehadiran korang ke kelas sebanyak 70% ( kalau attenden korang kurang 70% pun boleh sijil tapi susah untuk korang amik exam).
Kursus ada 4 modul dan korang boleh pilih untuk sepenuh masa (22 hari), modular (mengikut modul) dan part time (kelas hujung minggu selama 3 bulan)

Setelah selesai 22 hari korang akan dapat sijil sebagai seorang safety officer, tapi tunggu dulu.. korang tak boleh @ tak layak lagi untuk digelar SAFETY OFFICER tapi untuk bekerja sebagai safety supervisor atau safety promoter mungkin boleh la, bergantung pada syarikat atau kilang yan ko mintak tuh dan syarat untuk menjadi seorang SAFETY OFFICER yang kompeten adalah kena lulus exam yang dihandle oleh NIOSH (duit lagi....) harga exam dia RM950 untuk 4 paper. Paper 1 gabungan modul 1 dan 2, Paper 2 gabungan paper 3 dan 4, Paper 3 nie uji kemahiran korang dari station ke station dan paper 4 adalah Work Place Assignment.

Bila dah lulus dengan jayanya keempat-empat paper tuh pun belum boleh jadi seorang SHO yang kompeten, ko kena ada pengalaman dalam safety selama 3 tahun dahulu, barulah boleh berdaftar dengan DOSH dan korang akan dapat buku hijau ala-ala passport bangla tuh... hahah.

Tapi kalau ko dah ader experience dalam safety, ko takyah tunggu 3 tahun, boleh terus apply kat DOSH untuk dapatkan nombor badan dan buku hijau.

Prospek kerja untuk SHO ni terlalu luas.. boleh dikatakan semua premis yang mempunyai pekerja lebih dari 100 orang memerlukan atau diharuskan menggaji seorang SHO termasuklan Hotel, Hospital, Kilang, Tapak pembinaan (tapi sekarang CIDB dah adakan kursus khas SHO untuk pembinaan), Pelabuhan, Pasaraya dan saya dapat tahu Bank Negara juga sudah menggaji seorang SHO. Bak kata, yang mana terikat dengan OSHA 94 memerlukan SHO dan majikan pulak boleh bertahan hanya 3 bulan sahaja tanpa SHO dan selepas itu dia wajib cari SHO atau berdepan dengan tindakan undang-undang. Wauuu, tengoklah betapa pentingnya Safety kt sini.

Toolbox meeting is part of daily routine for Offshore Oil & Gas Workers. Main reason is to identify hazard and to ensure all safety pre-cautions are in place before and during execution of works. Safety officer is also another interesting jobs. For those who are interested to become one, below are the safety officer roles, responsibilities and qualifications.
  • Roles and Responsibilities

    • Assist Management in developing and implementing their HSE plans and advise on operatinal safety matters related to the works.
    • Co-ordinate and conduct inspections/audits of facilities and activities to ensure compliance to safe and good work practices in accordance to statutory requirement of the Factories and Machinery ACT and all safety Procedures.
    • Have the ability to communicate in written and spoken English & Local language.
    • Give safety presenation with the objective to enhance the Health, safety and Environment awareness of all workers.
    • Assist in accident investigation, reporting and important their follow up in accordance to safety procedures.
  • Qualifications

    • Must have 5 years working experience in Supervisory position in the related field of oil and gas industry.
    • Must possess a recognized Diploma in an engineering discipline or a recognized Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) or completed training and assessment by National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) and have a minimum of 3 years experience working in OSH or minimum 10 years working experience in OSH.
    • Must have attended the following local safety courses conducted by Safety Training Institution:

      • Supervisory Safety
      • Accident Investigation Skill
      • First Aider
      • Basic Fire Fighting and BA
    • Must have attended the following local courses relevant to their operation:

      • Sea Survival.
      • Crane & lifting operation.
      • Scaffolding inspection
      • Permit to Work Authorized Gas Tester Certification Course.
      • Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO)
    • Must posses knowledge and skill on:
      • Hazard and effect Management Process/Risk Management
      • HSE cases
      • Emergency response
      • Law, Regulation & Permits
      • HSE Auditing
